“Doin’ my piece to fit in. This is Boulder, after all,”

Warren said dryly.

“Ah. Well. Whenever you’re not running errands or

sculpting, then.”

“I’ll bring lunch this afternoon.”

The man certainly seemed to get off on feeding him. Or

perhaps it just seemed that way. Regardless, Gil was more

than happy to encourage him to keep doing it. “That would

be great, thanks.”

“See you then.” Warren hung up the phone.

“Right.” Gil stared at the receiver for a moment,

wondering why his face ached. Then he got it. He was

smiling. It had been a while.

He spent the morning doing his best to tidy things up,

forcing himself to bend and stretch and move even though

his incredibly comfortable bed called to him like a siren. His

physical terrorists had stressed, repeatedly and with great

verve, the importance of movement and light exercise, and

Gil wasn’t brave enough to defy them even though he hadn’t

seen Stacia or Ryan in over six months. He moved books

back onto shelves, put old newspapers out into the recycling

bin, and fed the cat, which materialized as an inky blur for a

moment, shot him an evil yellow-eyed glare, and inhaled its

food before vanishing into the nearest closet.

“If you eat my Gucci loafers, I will skin you for my next

pair of shoes,” Gil warned. It hissed at him. “Just so we

understand each other.”

The floor could use vacuuming, but the cat tended to

attack when the vacuum got going, and so Gil decided it

couldn’t hurt to postpone it for a few more days. He put a

pot of coffee on to percolate, conscientiously adding two

extra scoops to the filter, then grabbed his last stack of

student essays from the semester that he really should have

had graded last week and uncapped his red pen. He was

sure to need it.

After an hour, Gil was a hairsbreadth away from

banging his head on the table in a fit of frustration, so it was

good Warren arrived when he did. He didn’t knock; he just

came inside, made his way into the kitchen, and set a bag of

food down on the counter before turning to Gil. “You look

upset.”

“Not upset,” Gil corrected. “Frustrated. Annoyed.

Occasionally incensed, but not upset.”

“Why?” Warren asked as he started taking food cartons

out.

“Because elementary grammar and punctuation are

apparently beyond some people. God, look at this. Double

ellipses, it’s like the literary version of an awkward pause, or

would be if this was meant to be an ironic essay and the

writer had the faintest inkling that they can only break the

rule if they already know why the rule exists.” Gil ran a hand

through

his

messy

curls

and

rolled

his

eyes.

“Undergraduates.” He perked up as he finally smelled the

food Warren was unpacking. “Chinese food?”

“From the Half Moon Grill.”

“That’s my favorite Chinese restaurant,” Gil said with a

smile.

“I saw their takeout menu on your counter. Figured you

might like them.”

“Your observational prowess is only surpassed by your

keen instincts,” Gil said as he grabbed a carton. “You got

sesame tofu? Excellent, I love that.”

“Care for a plate?” Warren asked, a half smile lingering

around his lips. “Or do you prefer to just dive in?”
